How can defined needs meet technology and system readiness in India?

There are many AI models already developed and being developed for healthcare; however, they don’t always meet the real needs of patients and healthcare professionals.

In this panel discussion, our speakers explored:

• How can academic research be stimulated so outcomes effectively support the development and implementation of AI solutions in real healthcare situations?
• Which publications relating to AI are useful in a practical sense, and which ones are not?
• How can real healthcare needs be identified so technological readiness can be aligned to those needs?
• Considerations about algorithm and product development
• Why are some models more scalable than others?
• The implementation side of AI innovation: why models don’t always work as expected?

Dr Charles Young (panel co-chair)
Editor-in-Chief; Research Connections
Dr Young, BSc (Hons), MB BS (Hons), MRCP, is an emergency physician, senior healthcare academic, and digital healthcare leader. At present, as well as his clinical work, he is Editor in Chief of Research Connections, Senior Health Adviser to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID), Non-Executive Director for Your Healthcare, and an external adviser to the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). He is internationally recognised for his leadership and development of biomedical journals, digital health tools, and evidenced based healthcare products. Some of his roles in the past have included Executive Editor at The Lancet, Editor in Chief at the BMJ Evidence Centre, and Vice President for Clinical Solutions at Wiley. He has also worked as a longstanding adviser to the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and as a member of the Cochrane Collaboration’s Editorial Review Committee.

Professor of Regulatory Science and Innovation; Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham
Professor Alastair Denniston is Chair of the UK’s National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare, an NIHR Senior Investigator, Professor in Regulatory Science and Innovation at the University of Birmingham, and a clinician at University Hospitals Birmingham NHSFT. He is Director of the UK’s Centre of Excellence for Regulatory Science and Innovation in AI & Digital Health (CERSI-AI), is a Member of the UK Government’s Regulatory Horizons Council and is Non-Executive Director to the UK’s Health Research Authority. He is passionate about supporting innovation in advanced digital and AI health technologies to accelerate the development of products that are effective, safe, and equitable, and that make a difference to people in the ‘real world’.

Piotr Orzechowski
CEO & Founder Infermedica
Piotr Orzechowski is the founder and CEO of Infermedica, a health AI company improving healthcare accessibility through AI-driven symptom analysis and triage. Since 2012, he has led Infermedica to secure over $50 million in funding and expand to 32 countries. Piotr holds a Master of Science in Computer Science from the Technical University of Wrocław and has participated in programs like the Google for Startups Global Alumni Program and the Leadership Academy for Poland. Recognized as a thought leader in digital health, he is also a husband, father of two boys, and enjoys tennis and playing guitar.

Dr Serge Stinckwich
Head of Research; United Nations University Institute in Macau
Dr Serge Stinckwich is a computer scientist and the Head of Research at the United Nations University International Institute for Software Technology (UNU-IIST) located in Macau, with 16+ years of experience at the intersection of digital technologies and sustainable development across Asia and Africa. Since 2020, he has led an interdisciplinary research team at UNU in Macau (up to 8 researchers), focusing on responsible AI, gender and technology, digital health and agent-based/participatory modelling to advance the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His research spans complex system modelling, social simulation and the impact of AI on global challenges.

Dr Jayanta Roy
Director and Head of Neurology, Manipal Hospital
Dr Jayanta Roy (MD, DM, FRCP (UK)) is a senior neurologist and stroke specialist based in India, currently serving as Director of Neurology and Director of Academics and Research at Manipal Hospitals, East Region (Kolkata, India). After advanced training in cerebrovascular diseases in Canada, he returned to India to establish the first comprehensive stroke unit in Eastern India and has since led the development of scalable stroke care systems across both urban and resource-constrained settings. He has multiple international peer-reviewed publications and is widely involved in national and international research collaborations. His current work focuses on applying artificial intelligence to acute stroke care, healthcare delivery, and clinical decision support, with the goal of improving access, efficiency, and equity in the Indian healthcare system.
