OUP invites you to join us for a virtual session exploring the unique and not-so-unique challenges faced by journals in the humanities, social sciences, and law (HSSL) and how your journal(s) can plan for long-term success and sustainability amid an ongoing market transformation.

Wider discussions about the changing academic journals market can sometimes leave out conditions specific to HSSL journals. They tend to have relatively fewer authors supported by major grants, slower uptake of open access, longer and more language-intensive articles, more book reviews and other article types, more independent/adjunct/practitioner authors, more connection to books and other formats, and longer citational half-lives. More broadly and existentially, we know that HSSL fields have been especially affected by budget cuts and shifting enrollments in recent years, impacting journals and journal-owning organizations.

This session will be a chance to look more in-depth at the journals landscape through an HSSL lens. As your publisher, and as a not-for-profit university press with a mission aligning us with our partners, OUP is committed to keeping you informed, connecting larger trends with the specificities of your area. Instead of prescribing one-size solutions, we aim to offer information to support organic, relevant, nuanced journal strategies.
