(10:20-11:00 CST) - The Magic of Preschool
By Jen Dobson & Julia Mena Dobson
Preschool classes are full of magic moments. Those of discovery as the children experience the wonders of the world we live in. The excitement with the puppet, as their beloved course character comes alive, who they can hug, interact and share their feelings with. The fun of experimenting with materials to create art. The tender instances as they form their first friendships, learning together in play. And the sound of their laughter as they join in with the stories about the characters’ antics and adventures. As teachers, our rewards come through being an integral part of the children’s journeys, and in the moments of pride as they use their emerging language and develop new skills.
However, things don’t always go according to plan! It’s not always easy to see the fairy dust or know when and how to sprinkle it. In this session, we will learn to identify the sparks and explore how to ignite these magical moments through sharing our favourite anecdotes and the teaching tips, which are also included in Toy Team, that came from them.
Join us to find out how to extract the special ingredients for our spells for success, to help make your preschool classes truly magic!

(11:10-11:50 CST) - Nurturing a Global Future for Today's Young Adults
By Rob Peacock
How can we inspire students to participate actively in a global society? In this session we will look at five interdependent skills clusters for 21st century learning, as well as some practical classroom methods for learner development which also help educators discover the joy of teaching. We will see how teaching communication strategies, building discussions around engaging and relevant video material, and presentation practice with examples from non-native speakers can provide a satisfying experience for teachers and learners alike.

(11:50-12:30 CST) - The Joys of Progress: Assessment for Learning
By Mark Richard
One of the purest joys of teaching is seeing a student’s face light up as they realize how much they have improved. Assessment for Learning (AfL) is an everyday way of teaching that encourages students to bridge the gap between their current and desired performance. This session shows how to implement AfL through small teaching changes that equip students to monitor their progress and act on our feedback. It also shares human and digital ways to diagnose learner levels so that in-class teaching and student placement are as painless, practical and efficient as possible.
