How AI should affect English Language Teaching (ELT) is an ongoing global debate. This session will bring teachers up to date with the latest research on what AI means for language teachers and learners. It will clarify what AI is and which AI tools are being used in ELT. It will address practical and ethical considerations of AI's role in the learning process and help teachers to understand AI's potential benefits, limitations and dangers. Crucially, it will reinforce the importance of teachers' cultural knowledge and emotional intelligence for engaging learners in lessons. Finally, the session will evaluate the potential of AI in English language teachers’ daily work, and showcase practical, engaging ways to develop the creativity, critical thinking and language skills that students will need to work successfully with AI in the future.
