Interdisciplinary research promises richer insight into complex questions, but designing and scoping such projects brings distinct intellectual, methodological, and practical challenges.

In this moderated panel discussion, Oxford Intersections editorial board members reflect on their own experiences designing, developing, and evaluating interdisciplinary research projects. Drawing on work across the humanities and social sciences, panelists will discuss how interdisciplinary collaborations take shape in practice and how researchers can navigate questions of scope, coherence, and feasibility at different stages of a project’s life cycle.

This webinar is designed for researchers at all career stages interested in developing interdisciplinary projects that are ambitious, coherent, and collaborative.

Molly Richards is an Acquisitions Editor working on Oxford Intersections at Oxford University Press. Oxford Intersections is a digital resource for interdisciplinary scholarship from across the arts, humanities, and social sciences that addresses complex and urgent global challenges. Molly is the lead Acquisitions Editor for projects that include Climate Adaptation, which explores who we become, socially and culturally, as our places, livelihoods, and communities are reshaped by a changing climate, and Heritage, Culture, and Knowledge, which examines heritage as a tool for finding solutions to the overlapping crises of the modern age.

Prof Karen Soldatić
Canada Excellence Research Chair in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing; Professor, School of Disability Studies Toronto Metropolitan University, Canada
Karen Soldatić is Canada Excellence Research Chair in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing and Professor in the School of Disability Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. She is an international scholar of disability, marginality, and global inequality. Her research on disability and processes of inequality builds on her twenty years of experience as an international, national, and state‐based policy analyst, researcher, and educator. She obtained her PhD (Distinction) in 2010 from the University of Western Australia. She was awarded a Fogarty Foundation Excellence in Education Fellowship for 2006–2009, a British Academy International Fellowship in 2012, a fellowship at The Centre for Human Rights Education at Curtin University (2011–2012), and an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship (2016–2019). Currently, she is an Extraordinary Professor in Disability & Rehabilitation, Stellenbosch University and sits on the Boards of Governance for Diversity Arts, Australia and Wellesley Institute, Canada.

Dr Kristina Sehlin MacNeil
Docent in Sámi Studies and Deputy Director for Várdduo - Centre for Sámi Research at Umeå University, Sweden
Kristina Sehlin MacNeil (PhD) is Associate Professor and Deputy Director for Várdduo - Centre for Sámi Research at Umeå University in Sweden. Her research focuses on conflict and power relations between Indigenous communities and extractive industries and international comparisons of these, different forms of violence that impacts Indigenous peoples, and Indigenous methodologies and ethics. She has extensive experience working together with Indigenous communities, predominantly in Sápmi and Australia. Kristina’s recent research has focused on energy production and how more just transitions can be achieved from Indigenous peoples’ perspectives. She is also co-editor for the Oxford University Press Intersections section Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Approaches to Climate Adaptation.

Dr Marianna Dudley

Dr Marianna Dudley is an environmental historian at the University of Bristol, where she co-directs the MA Environmental Humanities. Her second book, Electric Wind: An Energy History of Modern Britain was published by Manchester University Press in 2025. She is co-Editor of Environmental Humanities, the interdisciplinary journal.
