The online edition of Oxford National Conference returns with a fresh focus on Production Skills in the Digital World. This November, we’ll explore how to boost students’ confidence in both writing and speaking—two essential skills for real-world communication. With the rise of AI and evolving classroom dynamics, teachers face new challenges and opportunities.

    Duration: 2h 30min

Our international speakers, Neil Ainsworth and Charlotte Murphy, will guide us through:

Teaching and Assessing Writing in a World of AI
The initial amazement and wonder at what Chat GPT and other generative AI models can do has slowly shifted into an acceptance of these tools as integral parts of our professional and educational lives. The ubiquity of AI and the challenge of detecting its use leaves teachers with some fundamental questions on how we teach and assess writing. Not least: Is there any point teaching students to write when machines can do it more quickly and effectively? (Spoiler alert: yes, there is). What does the existence of AI mean for classroom practice, writing assignments, and the assessment of writing? In this session we’ll take on all these questions and look to provide teachers with strategies for keeping the teaching and assessment of writing relevant in a world of generative AI.

Practical Ideas and Strategies to Support Speaking Skills
This session will share a range of practical ideas to support learners in developing spoken confidence and classroom communication. With a nod to oracy skills, pronunciation, and other key elements, we’ll explore flexible strategies that English language teachers can adapt to suit different contexts and learner needs..

Join us for an afternoon of inspiration, practical insights, and forward-thinking strategies to support your learners in today’s digital world.
